Abstract

The concept of the city, which has gained meaning with the existence of mankind, is the most important phenomenon that must be understood beyond the conceptual discussion of the urban form. Although each city has similar components, each city's unique aspects make it different from the others. The transition to settled life with the beginning of the agricultural revolution also pioneered the shaping of cities. The existence of many components that shape a city creates a multidisciplinary research area where many disciplines make inferences together in order to understand the urban form. The primary factor in determining cities and even in choosing a settlement area to live in is the geography of that city. Theories that developed in the triangle of the concepts of man, time and space have shaped the science of history integrated with history in the process and many branches of science such as engineering, architecture and archaeology that emerged afterwards have addressed cities in various aspects. Sometimes shaped by a power struggle, sometimes by a form of government, sometimes by just an effort to survive, cities develop in an integrated way with people and time with each of their parts. The basis of this study is to descriptively understand urban forms and the factors that affect the development, change and transformation efforts of cities in the historical process. The scope of the study includes the description of various urban forms that emerged in the historical process and also the philosophy of a city's formation. As a result of the study, it is aimed to have an idea about the cities we live in, to support urban planning decisions that emerge especially in multi-layered cities, with the awareness of historical environmental protection and to develop ideas about the future of cities.
